Raiders draft another receiver in fourth round

Going into the draft, nearly every mock draft had the Oakland Raiders picking a wide receiver with their first pick – not too many people figured they’d draft another.

The Raiders continued their head-scratching draft by selecting another wide receiver with their first of two picks in the fourth round on Sunday.

The Oakland Raiders drew heaps of criticism after trading down and selecting little-known Mike Mitchell from Ohio University with the 47th pick of the draft.

Tom Cable wasn’t worried about the criticism. In spite of the criticism, he touted that Mitchell was worthy of the second round selection and explained the pick with a Bill Walsh saying: “When you find a player that you want, go get him. Don’t worry about it. Go get him.”

Raiders select unknown in the second round

NFL.com’s website didn’t have him listed on their draft tracker, he wasn’t listed on Todd McShay’s list, and even Mel Kiper barely had him listed in his 2009 NFL Draft book. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock had only found out about him three weeks ago.

Oakland Raiders draft Heyward-Bey

The Oakland Raiders were predicted by many talking heads to select a wide receiver with pick number seven of the 2009 NFL Draft, but few predicted it would be Darrius Heyward-Bey from Maryland.

Many of the mock drafts had the Raiders selecting two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech or Missouri speedster Jeremy Maclin. Heyward-Bey was thought of as the third or fourth best receiver on the board.
